What Are ACL Injuries?

ACL injuries are a common ailment we see here in our Decatur IL animal hospital. Most often, ACL injuries are found in dogs and are caused by rough-housing while playing. However, older dogs who are less active are also prone to ACL injuries—especially those that are overweight. Either way, an ACL injury refers to the rupture of the cruciate ligament in a dog's leg. This can be a very painful injury and can result in a dog being unable to get around easily. Often times, dogs suffering from this ailment will become lethargic or will be visibly limping or putting less weight on the affected leg.

If you believe your dog is suffering from an ACL injury, we encourage you to bring him or her into our office to see a veterinarian. We will be able to diagnose the injury through a physical examination, which will likely include an X-ray. From there, we can determine the best course for treatment. In most instances, surgery is the best choice for repairing a torn ACL and restoring your dog's mobility. However, if the injury was caused by your dog being overweight and older in age, then we may also recommend that you switch your dog to a diet food in order to prevent the injury from occurring again.

Testimonial

I visit Fairview Animal Hospital at least once a week for a few of my fur-babies to receive laser therapy and the ENTIRE staff always shows genuine concern for my babies as well as me. They are always completely honest in the care they believe my pets need and only suggest treatments that they firmly believe would help my babies comfort. I have six dogs and two cats who all have their own issues and they know them all by name, know what their problems are and cater to their individual needs. The best part of this staff, is that every single one of my babies thoroughly enjoys their visits which is most important to me.
