Advanced Pet Diagnostics
Sometimes a wellness visit brings issues to the surface that may require additional testing. You may have concerns about your pet’s health and need answers that can’t be provided any other way than with pet diagnostics. Our state-of-the-art equipment and training make our diagnostic services for our Fairview patients reliable and fast. We know you don’t want to be left waiting in the dark when you’re concerned about your pet’s health. By offering an immediate look inside your companion with digital X-rays, ultrasound studies, along with our laboratory testing capabilities, we’re able to diagnose a large variety of medical conditions.
Radiography, or X-rays, are indispensable when it comes to pet diagnostics. From helping fix broken bones to providing high quality pet dental care, digital radiography aids us in evaluating many medical conditions in your pet. The digital X-rays at Fairview expose your pet to lower amounts of radiation than traditional ones. Furthermore, they take no time to process so we can pursue a diagnosis of your pet’s medical condition promptly.
Some of the ways digital X-rays help us include:
- We can look at the size, shape and location of organs to diagnose things like liver, kidney and heart disease.
- We can determine if your pet has a bowel or urinary obstruction.
- We can see if your pet has bladder or kidney stones.
- We can evaluate the lungs for infection, tumors, and allergic disease.
- We can diagnose tooth decay and bone loss from periodontal disease.
- We can diagnose arthritis.
- We can diagnose certain tumors.
A Deeper Look with Ultrasonography
Our on-site ultrasound machine helps us diagnose medical conditions we find during an illness or wellness visit. Ultrasonography uses sound waves to give us on-screen visuals of exactly what’s going on in your pet’s abdomen. We can determine how many puppies or kittens your pregnant pet is expecting and diagnose many serious medical issues.
Some of the conditions ultrasonography helps us diagnose:
- Cysts and tumors
- Bladder and kidney stones
- Cancerous abdominal masses
- Excess abdominal fluid
Comprehensive In-House Laboratory
Our in-house laboratory helps our veterinarians diagnose underlying diseases and infections in your pet – like fungal, skin and parasitic infections. When you bring your pet in for a wellness or illness visit, please bring in a fresh stool sample so we can check for internal parasites like hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms. Our doctors recommend annual blood testing for heartworm and we recommend senior pets have a comprehensive blood panel to evaluate organ function, blood cells and thyroid levels. At Fairview Hospital for Animals, we utilize advanced blood analyzers to check for pre-surgical and underlying conditions. By evaluating your pet’s blood counts, chemistries and oxygen levels, we’re able to diagnose conditions such as diabetes, kidney, liver and heart disease. For dermatological conditions, we utilize skin scraping, cytology (the use of cell analylsis) and cultures to assess your pet’s skin condition. Our doctors evaluate urine samples to diagnose problems like bladder and kidney infections, diabetes, and liver disease. Here at Fairview Hospital for Animals we also utilize outside laboratories for diagnosing hormonal diseases, evaluating tumors from surgical specimens, and specialized testing for less common but serious medical conditions.
