Caring for Your Dog or Cat After Surgery
We ask that you keep some points in mind as you care for your dog or cat after surgery. Your loyal companion will need extra TLC while they recover at home. We’ll send your pet home in your loving arms along with detailed after-surgery care instructions and appropriate pain medicine. The food your pet eats after surgery is important too and we can advise you on quality nutrition so they get needed vitamins and nutrients during their recovery time.
Some things you can do after your dog or cat’s surgery include:
- Check incision sites daily, and watch for unusual redness, swelling or discharge.
- Prevent your pet from chewing or scratching at incisions.
- Refrain from bathing your pet for at least 10 days.
- Give your pet a quiet area free from other pets for at least 24 hours.
- Gradually resume offering water and then food on the evening of your pet’s surgery.
- Administer antibiotic or pain medicines as prescribed.
If you suspect your pet is not recovering from surgery smoothly, or if you have any questions about our dog or cat surgery services please contact us. We’re always here for clients and their pets in Decatur and surrounding communities.
