Did you know there are more than 2,200 kinds of fleas, and about 900 species of ticks? Of course, not all of these reside in the United States, but plenty do, and they put your animal at risk of misery and sickness. If you want to fight fleas and eliminate ticks, the right treatment is crucial. While you can order treatments online, it’s much better to talk to a qualified veterinarian and ensure you’re doing right by your cat or dog.
Flea and tick treatment does more than ensure your pet’s comfort; it helps reduce the chances of allergic reactions and skin disease. When fleas and ticks are feeding on your pets, they are injecting saliva into the animal’s skin as well as withdrawing blood. If your pet is allergic to that saliva, they may have a reaction that turns into a long-term condition called allergy dermatitis. This can lead to them scratching and biting themselves, as well as losing hair. It’s not only unsightly, it’s miserable for the animal.
Unfortunately, fleas and ticks will not just “go away” if you wait, or if you stop treating your pets at a certain time of year. Flea and tick populations are fairly stable year-round, and while they might die down for a few months during the winter if you live in a cold area, they’ll pop right back up soon enough. That’s why it’s important to institute a year-round regimen that keeps your pet safe at all times of year.
Again, there are flea and tick treatments available online. However, there are a few main drawbacks of using these. The first is that you can’t guarantee the quality of the product, whereas those ordered by a vet are much more likely to be legitimate.
The second is that product labels aren’t always clear about the best amounts to use and treatment timing, and even if they are, you may not apply them correctly. That’s why it’s best to let a vet take care of the treatment, so that you’re less likely to cause a reaction in your pet, and more likely to keep them safe at all times of the year.

Services & More
I visit Fairview Animal Hospital at least once a week for a few of my fur-babies to receive laser therapy and the ENTIRE staff always shows genuine concern for my babies as well as me. They are always completely honest in the care they believe my pets need and only suggest treatments that they firmly believe would help my babies comfort. I have six dogs and two cats who all have their own issues and they know them all by name, know what their problems are and cater to their individual needs. The best part of this staff, is that every single one of my babies thoroughly enjoys their visits which is most important to me.
