Pet Allergies

pet skin allergiesHere at Fairview Animal Hospital, we pride ourselves on offering truly full scale pet care. One of the offerings that we have is help with pet allergies. Our pet dermatologist is highly experienced at working with pets suffering from allergic conditions and will work with you to help make your pet comfortable and healthy again.

What to Do If Your Pet Suffers From Skin Allergies?

There are several different types of pet allergies: Pet skin allergies, pet environmental allergies, and pet food allergies. We can help with all three types of allergies with a care plan that is custom created just for your pet and their specific allergies.

If your pet is constantly scratching, has reddish patches of skin, has areas of swollen skin (the paws are a common area for this) or has watery eyes they may have a skin allergy. The reason for such reactions is not always known - just like with humans, each pet is unique and their body chemistry may react differently to certain allergens.

Your pet can be tested for skin allergies just as a human can. We offer skin tests that will determine which types of agitators are causing your pet's allergies. Once we have isolated the cause of the skin allergies, we can treat them effectively in a couple of ways.

One option is medication that will help control your pet's reaction to the skin allergen. Another important thing that you can do as a pet owner is to make sure that the pet's bedding, toys, and other surfaces that the pet comes in contact with regularly are cleaned frequently.

Your pet may have a food allergy, which can be addressed in several different ways. The main way to deal with a food allergy is to change the food that your pet is eating. Sometimes a prescription food may be necessary if the dog is allergic to multiple things or has a very severe food allergy. However, it might just be as simple as switching the food you are currently feeding for another one with different main ingredients.

If your pet has an environmental allergy like pollen, this can be addressed in a few different ways. If the allergy is a serious one, medication may be needed to help control it. You can also help by making sure that your pet gets regular baths, especially baths in cooler water, and by wiping their paws off whenever they come inside. Pollen clings to nearly everything including your pet's fur, so just keeping them clean will go a long way!

Our Pet Dermatologist Can Help

No matter which type of allergy your pet is dealing with, our pet dermatologist is here to help. We have effectively treated many pet allergies, thereby making pets and their owners both happier and more comfortable.

In the rare event that we are unable to successfully treat your pet's allergy, we can refer you to pet allergy specialists who can help extreme cases like these as well.

I visit Fairview Animal Hospital at least once a week for a few of my fur-babies to receive laser therapy and the ENTIRE staff always shows genuine concern for my babies as well as me. They are always completely honest in the care they believe my pets need and only suggest treatments that they firmly believe would help my babies comfort. I have six dogs and two cats who all have their own issues and they know them all by name, know what their problems are and cater to their individual needs. The best part of this staff, is that every single one of my babies thoroughly enjoys their visits which is most important to me.
