Frequently Asked Questions about Veterinary Care

Fairview Hospital for Animals routinely fields questions from Decatur pet owners. These include:
How frequently does my pet normally need to visit the vet? We recommend an annual wellness evaluation for healthy adult animals. Puppies and kittens may require several visits during their first year of life so we can monitor their growth and development, while senior pets may need additional monitoring due to age-related health conditions.

Which vaccinations does my pet need? Pets need to receive "core" vaccinations -- inoculations aimed at protecting them against some of the most common and deadly diseases. Pets lose the natural immunity they received from their mother after just a few weeks, so puppies and kittens always need to receive vaccinations against rabies, distemper and other ailments. Leptospirosis 4 is one of our clinic's core vaccines for dogs. If your pet spends a lot of time outdoors or among other pets, we may also recommend optional vaccinations against kennel cough or Lyme disease.

Why do pets need regular dental care? Just as humans must get regular checkups and cleanings, pets should have annual dental evaluations to protect their teeth and gums against disease. Oral plaque can develop into tough tartar that attracts bacteria, and this bacterial infestation can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, tooth loss, and possibly even systemic bacterial infections. Our veterinarian has the necessary tools and expertise to scrape away tartar buildup while also inspecting the teeth for damage and the oral cavity for cancer.

What counts as an urgent or emergency situation? Any condition that causes your pet acute discomfort, such as an abscessed tooth or skin irritation, can reasonably be considered urgent. Emergencies, however, are those situations where prompt care is needed to prevent death or serious complications. These include suspected poisoning, seizures, broken bones, uncontrollable bleeding, choking, loss of consciousness, staggering, difficult labor, difficult urination and other alarming symptoms.

How do you handle emergencies? We maintain a 24-hour emergency on-call service. The skilled, experienced professionals who respond to your call will instruct you on emergency first aid or refer to the nearest emergency animal hospital. Our clinic also offers urgent care during our regular office hours.

How can my pet benefit from veterinary boarding? If you must travel and cannot carry your pet with you to your destination, scheduling veterinary boarding can prove both safer and more pleasant for your pet than relying on a pet nanny or concerned friend. If your pet is very old, very young or has a condition that requires special care, boarding him at a veterinary facility can ensure that his health and wellness needs are met while you are away. Our veterinary team knows how to watch for signs of a possible emergency, administer daily medications, and make pets feel relaxed and at ease.

Testimonial

I visit Fairview Animal Hospital at least once a week for a few of my fur-babies to receive laser therapy and the ENTIRE staff always shows genuine concern for my babies as well as me. They are always completely honest in the care they believe my pets need and only suggest treatments that they firmly believe would help my babies comfort. I have six dogs and two cats who all have their own issues and they know them all by name, know what their problems are and cater to their individual needs. The best part of this staff, is that every single one of my babies thoroughly enjoys their visits which is most important to me.
